Life cycle assessment (LCA)

We assess the environmental impacts of a product, process or activity at every stage, from raw materials to the end of its useful life, to pinpoint where to act.

UNE-EN ISO 14040UNE-EN ISO 14044EcodesignEPD

In brief

  • Analyses the product or process "from cradle to grave".
  • Identifies the hotspots and the improvement opportunities with the greatest impact.
  • Makes it possible to compare processes for the same product or products made from different materials.
  • It is the basis for ecodesign, eco-labelling and environmental product declarations.

What is an LCA for?

Its main purpose is to provide information for identifying improvement opportunities. Because it makes it possible to compare processes for the same product or products made from different materials, it has direct applications in product design and development, continuous process improvement, strategic planning and environmental communication.

The LCA is also the basis for ecodesign, eco-labelling and environmental product declarations.

Who is it for?

Companies seeking to optimise resources and reduce costs. The study identifies the hotspots and the relevant improvements, providing useful data before any investment is made.

Stages analysed

We study and quantify the environmental impacts associated with each stage in the life of the product, process or activity:

  • Raw material acquisition: extraction or sourcing of raw materials and energy inputs, including transport prior to production.
  • Processing and manufacturing: the activities needed to convert raw materials and energy into the product.
  • Distribution and transport: moving the finished product to the customer, including any intermediate points (warehouses, distributors, retailers).
  • Use, reuse and maintenance: use of the product throughout its service life.
  • Recycling: recycling within the same product system (closed loop) or in a different one (open loop), and the options for giving it a second use.
  • Waste management: once it has served its purpose, the product returns to the environment as waste.

Regulatory framework

The assessment is carried out in accordance with the international reference standards: UNE-EN ISO 14040 (principles and framework) and UNE-EN ISO 14044 (requirements and guidelines). ISO 14044 replaced the former ISO 14041, 14042 and 14043.

Benefits of an LCA

  • Pinpoints the stages with the greatest environmental impact so you can act at the source of the problem.
  • Identifies specific improvements: lower emissions, energy efficiency, reduced resource consumption.
  • Provides objective, quantitative and rigorous environmental information about your products.
  • Gives you clear arguments for communicating with customers, authorities and stakeholders.
  • Drives continuous improvement and eco-innovation.

Why TMI?

We gather the information and analyse each stage of the product or process. You can focus the study on the key products and processes that best match your current needs.

Frequently asked questions

What does "from cradle to grave" mean?

That the whole cycle is analysed: extraction and processing of raw materials, production, transport and distribution, use and maintenance, reuse, recycling and disposal at the end of the useful life.

Do I have to analyse all my products?

No. The study can be limited to the key product or process you are most interested in, depending on your objectives.

How does it relate to environmental product declarations?

The LCA is the basis on which environmental product declarations (EPDs), eco-labelling and ecodesign projects are built.
